As part of our growth strategy and our plans to establish state-of-the-art Research Teams for our Vegetable Business Unit, we are looking for a Head of Applied Genomics, based at KWS Vegetables’ headquarters in Wageningen, the Netherlands. The Head of Applied Genomics will co-develop the research strategy for KWS Vegetables and will lead the Applied Genomics team. Areas of expertise include Bioinformatics & Statistical analyses, Marker Technology and Molecular Breeding, with a focus on both (applied) research and the development and implementation of technologies, methods and protocols for routine molecular breeding. She/He will report to the Head of Research Vegetables of KWS.


Job purpose


Contribute to the competitiveness of the worldwide KWS vegetable breeding portfolio by continuous scouting, development and implementaton of genomic technologies, methodologies and analyses. Develop a successful strategy for the Applied Genomics team that contributes to overall R&D plans and the strategic plan of the Business Unit and results in commercially successful vegetable varieties. Direct, approve and monitor the Applied Genomics programs that are run by the genomics scientists, biostatisticians and molecular breeders and establish and maintain good interactions with the Global Research and Services Department of KWS worldwide.


Key Success Factors:


  • Implementation of technologies and tools to effectively analyze large genomic data sets;
  • Efficient collaboration with the Service Department of KWS for molecular marker analyses;
  • Secure strategic partnerships with external partners, e.g. universities and technology providers;
  • Professionalism of the Applied Genomics team, alignment with other teams with the KWS Research Departments worldwide;
  • Output in supporting the breeding teams;
  • Quality of use and control of the Applied Genomics budget.


Your Tasks:


  • Formulate, advise and facilitate the execution of the short and long term strategy for Applied Genomics in line with the overall KWS Vegetables strategy;
  • Build and lead a successful Applied Genomics team in Wageningen, the Netherlands, including the attraction and development of highly skilled Genomics Scientists, Biostatisticians and Molecular Breeders;
  • Build alliances with technology providers as well as with the Research and Services Departments of KWS;
  • Ensure development and implementation of state-of-the-art molecular breeding technologies, methods and protocols;
  • Facilitate breeding support towards all KWS vegetable crops through the use of genomic data sets, biostatistics and the analyses of molecular markers;
  • Participate in across crop strategic platforms and technology development projects within KWS’ Global Research and Service Departments;
  • Prepare and control, in collaboration with the Global Head of Research, the Applied Genomics research budgets, including facility needs and routine service costs;
  • Lead and direct, in cooperation with HR, the personnel flow within the Applied Genomics team, including appraisals, training, development and career planning in order to ensure individual and team performance.


Your profile:


  • PhD/MSc in a scientific discipline;
  • 5+ years of experience in Crop Genomics;
  • Proven record of effectively building and leading a team of research professionals;
  • Intercultural management experience;
  • People oriented leadership style;
  • Thorough practical and theoretical knowledge of Crop Genomics and the usage of molecular marker analyses;
  • Experience in Project Management and Finance & Accounting
  • Language skills: English (fluent);
  • International orientation;
  • Willingness to travel internationally max. 10% of time.
