Manage Multi-crop Greenhouses as well as assist with seed production at the research station. This position has primary responsibility for the production of experimental sugarbeet seed which may include but is not limited to, seedling production, oversight of seed production, and detailed planning and reporting processes. Essential job functions:
- Manage and conduct regulated sugarbeet and corn research greenhouse activities.
- Work with Plant Breeders conducting regulated seed production for both sugarbeets and corn projects.
- Manage greenhouse activities including environmental control, alarm calls, pest control, fertility, watering, seedling production, vernalizing, selfing and hand crosses.
- Manage disease and methodical insect trials.
- Manage greenhouse seed inventories.
- Manage the devitalization program.
- Assist with the management of the Campus containment plan.
- Assist with seed plot site selection, fertility, planting, watering, pest management, weed control, structure assembly, data collection, plot maintenance, rouging, harvest and record keeping.
- Manage greenhouse staff ensuring all workers are following safety and regulatory protocol and proper training is being conducted.
- Manage budget costs and supplies related to specific research activities.
- Coordinate greenhouse and greenhouse equipment repairs.
- Create and maintain work instructions.
- Responsible for staying current on all regulatory compliance requirements for GMO trials and seed production.
Required qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science or equivalent in Agronomy, Agriculture, Business, Biology.
- Knowledge and experience in seed and crop production and/or research greenhouse experience.
- Ability to work variable hours including occasional weekends as required by the business.
- Possess a valid Driver’s License.
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally.
- Demonstrated strong proficiency in computer skills with working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
- Demonstrated excellent organizational and communication skills with consistent attention to detail.
Preferred qualifications:
- Demonstrated ability to foster and work effectively in a team environment.
- Possess or be able to obtain a Private Pesticide Applicators license.
- Forklift and tractor operations experience.
Working environment:
Perform outdoor and indoor work in variable conditions including heat, cold, dust wind and rain. Field and greenhouse environments with exposure to pollen and handling chemicals.
