Are you passionate about plant breeding and ready to shape the future of hybrid wheat in Northern Europe? KWS UK Ltd. is seeking a dedicated Hybrid Wheat Breeder to join our team on a full-time, onsite basis. This exciting opportunity is open to candidates based either in Thriplow, UK or Wetze, Germany, with regular travel between breeding stations.

In this pivotal role, you will lead the development of our hybrid wheat breeding programme, driving innovation and collaboration across international teams. If you’re looking to make a meaningful impact in a dynamic and forward-thinking environment, we’d love to hear from you.

 

Your Responsibilities

As Hybrid Wheat Breeder, you will:

  • Play a main role in developing the hybrid wheat breeding programme for Northern Europe, with full organisational and operational responsibility.
  • Develop heterotic pools using KWS genetic resources in close collaboration with parental breeding programmes.
  • Strengthen hybrid pools tailored to key market needs.
  • Apply hybridization protocols and KWS’s proprietary male sterility system.
  • Manage genetic trials and trait databases for parental lines.
  • Collaborate with internal teams including wheat breeders, research and biotechnology team, and seed production.
  • Supervise and develop breeding teams, including assistant breeders, technicians, and seasonal staff.
  • Support commercial launches and variety trials.
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards and internal policies.
  • Maintain full onsite presence and demonstrate flexibility for national and international travel, particularly during spring and summer seasons.
 

Your Profile

To thrive in this role, you bring:

  • A Master’s or PhD in plant breeding or a related discipline, with a focus on hybrid breeding.
  • At least 2 years of experience in (hybrid) crop breeding - experience in cereals is highly valued. And a deep understanding of hybrid breeding theory.
  • Strong proficiency in quantitative genetics, genomic selection, and field experimentation.
  • Solid skills in statistics and database management.
  • Excellent organisational, communication, and time management abilities.
  • A valid driver’s licence.
  • Willingness to travel across target market countries during key periods and flexible availability.
