Purpose of the role:

The timely and effective completion of field, laboratory and glasshouse operations is essential for the successful development of new varieties.  Additionally, team working and flexibility are critical for the effective operations of the small technical team which has to manage a heavy workload with significant seasonal peaks.

In this context, the job holder will assist and organise field, laboratory and glasshouse operations within the cereals department, but will provide assistance in other technical teams where required.

The job holder is expected to use his skills & experience to train and mentor other members of the breeding team.



  • Leading the WW crossing in the glasshouse.
  • Oversee laboratory quality testing for wheat.
  • Oversee the harvesting of wheat pedigree ears in conjunction with wheat breeders.
  • Assist with organisation and preparation of pedigree seed for sowing.
  • Oversee making Pedigree field books.
  • Disease scoring of pedigree material as directed by the Wheat Breeder.
  • Training and mentoring of members of the breeding team and temporary staff.
  • Assisting selection of breeding material.
  • Managing Winter Wheat breeding practicalities during the year – particularly the indoor turnaround.


Candidate Requirements:

  • You are eager to learn about plant breeding.
  • You have experience in managing teams.
  • You are able to work within teams and alone.
  • You have a UK driving license.
  • You are willing to work longer hours during harvest, drilling and other peak methods.
  • Previous experience in the agricultural sector would be a plus.
