KWS Seeds is looking for Research Intern and in this position, you will support the research activities for seed development.  You will assist with the overall management of the research plots, greenhouse activities, and develop operational knowledge in the area of seed research. The position is full-time and located in Shakopee, MN with hourly base salary of $18.50.

 

Essential job functions:

  • Prepare soil trays, mix soils, plant, transplant, label, organize, clean, and water greenhouse plants.

  • Collect plant tissue samples for DNA marker tests.

  • Thresh, process, clean, weigh, package and set up seed in the Seed Room.

  • Perform regulated GMO seed activities including but not limited to planting, assembling structures, maintaining plots, pollinating, selfing, rogueing and data collection, harvesting, processing.

  • Provide assistance in field activities such as planting, thinning, weeding, irrigation, notes, and data recording.

  • Perform general maintenance and cleaning or sanitation tasks.

  • Assist with other Research Station activities.

  • Comply with regulatory compliance guidelines

  • Follow all safety rules.

  • Other duties as needed by the business.

  • Ensure Company handbook, Rules, Regulations, Procedures, and safety policies are followed and personal protective equipment is used correctly.

  • Occasionally travel and/or drive on behalf of the business.

  • Meet attendance requirements.

 

Required qualifications:

  • Enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Associate Degree program pursuing Agriculture, Agronomy, Soil Sciences, Horticulture or related field.

  • Strong computer skills.

  • Demonstrated experience working independently.

  • Strong problem solving, detail-oriented and organizational skills.

  • Understand and speak English

  • Valid United States driver’s license and the ability to travel.  

 

Preferred qualifications:

  • Basic farm and crop science knowledge

  • Experience operating farm equipment.

  • Experience in agriculture research.

  • Engage in a university curriculum.

 

Working environment:

Perform outdoor and indoor work in variable conditions including heat, cold, dust wind, and rain. Field and farm environments with exposure to pollen and chemicals.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and move objects up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
